Departments of Universität Karlsruhe (TH)

Interdisciplinary and international

Innovation by tradition

This is the motto that governs the teaching and research at Universität Karlsruhe, which is very highly esteemed worldwide. Internationality and interdisciplinarity are extremely important here. Our research focuses primarily on information and communications technologies, energy technology, automation and assembly technology, environmental research, microstructure technology, nanotechnology, materials research, basic research in the natural sciences, geosciences and geophysics, transportation, and banking and insurance. In addition, there are seven Centers of Excellence in Research, nine graduate research centers, and six research workgroups on specific interdisciplinary topics.

Paving the way in computer science in Germany

Among other things, Universität Karlsruhe owes a great deal of its outstanding reputation to its large department of computer science: It was founded in 1972 and was the first of its kind in Germany. Other noteworthy features of the University include its degree program in business engineering, which received its distinctive Karlsruhe profile in the 1970s, as well as the department of chemical and process engineering, which is marked by close cooperation between natural sciences and engineering. Most recently, a new interdisciplinary degree program was created that remains unique in Germany: business informatics is a field that combines technical, economic, and legal issues.
