Department of Chemistry and Biosciences

Many people associate chemistry with spectacular scenes of shooting flames, thunderous explosions, and fireworks. But there’s a lot more than that to the science that deals with the properties and reactions of matter - especially at Universität Karlsruhe.

Chemistry at Karlsruhe has an outstanding tradition in basic and applied research, with countless renowned scientists - from Carl Weltzien to Fritz Haber - having worked here. And today? An international study in 1998 ranked Karlsruhe among the four top chemistry research institutions in Europe.

A degree in biology from Karlsruhe gives bioscience students especially strong prospects for careers in molecular cell biology and - in cooperation with environmental research institutes and engineering programs - in applied research. Graduate students may choose from areas of concentration ranging from zoology to genetics and industrial biology.

Whether you’re interested in researching nano-scale structures, cluster compounds, supramolecular structures, new combustion engineering techniques or biosciences, the Department of Chemistry and Biosciences has the answers you’re looking for.
